Thanks to our mild, wet climate, Dublin lawns grow for most of the year. Keeping on top of them is less about clever products and more about cutting at the right height, at the right frequency.
How often to cut
- Spring (March to May): every 1 to 2 weeks as growth picks up.
- Summer (June to August): weekly in a damp summer, less in dry spells.
- Autumn (September to November): every 2 weeks, tapering off.
- Winter: only an occasional tidy in mild spells, never when frosty or waterlogged.
Don't cut too short
Scalping the lawn is the most common mistake. Taking off no more than about a third of the height at a time keeps grass healthy and helps it crowd out moss and weeds. Leave it slightly longer in shade and in dry weather.
Moss and wet lawns
Moss loves Irish lawns: shade, damp and compacted soil. Raking out moss in spring or autumn, cutting back overhanging branches to let in light, and avoiding walking on waterlogged grass all help. If one patch is always soggy, drainage may be the real problem.
Long grass after holidays or a vacant period
Very long grass shouldn't be cut down in one go. It's brought down in stages so the lawn isn't damaged, then cut regularly after that.
When regular lawn care makes sense
If you're cutting every week from May to August and dreading it, regular visits take it off your plate. It also suits rental properties and holiday homes where nobody's there to mow. See our lawn care and grass cutting service, often combined with garden maintenance.
